A Montclair Holiday Calendar Built Inside an Estate, a Rail Terminal and a 230-Year-Old House

A slate-roofed brick and half-timbered house at twilight, with glowing windows, a stone entry and a leaf-strewn autumn lawn.

Montclair's holiday season opens tonight in a historic mansion and closes on December 20 in a former train terminal. Almost every confirmed date in between belongs to a nonprofit or a preservation group. The Montclair Foundation runs the first weekend at Van Vleck House & Gardens. The Montclair Flea runs the weekends after Thanksgiving inside Lackawanna Plaza. The Montclair History Center has four December events at Crane House and the Historic YWCA on Orange Road. The Montclair Art Museum hosts a fundraiser and opens a new exhibition partway through.

The season comes together as a circuit of buildings, and each building shapes what happens inside it.

The Season Opens on an Estate Lawn

The Montclair Foundation starts the season at its own headquarters. Members get first access to the Holiday Boutique at Van Vleck House tonight, November 12, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The public hours are Friday, November 13, and Saturday, November 14, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., then Sunday, November 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Foundation describes the sellers as local businesses and women-owned businesses.

Holding the boutique at Van Vleck changes what a gift-shopping trip feels like. The vendors are local, so the Montclair names you would otherwise visit one storefront at a time on Bloomfield Avenue are gathered in a single house set in gardens. One afternoon covers a good part of the gift list, and the Foundation's grounds come with it.

A week later the Foundation moves to the next building on the circuit. Its Deck the Halls 2026 fundraiser runs Saturday, November 21, from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Montclair Art Museum, with cocktails, dinner and a live auction. A dressy fundraiser in the museum and a daytime boutique at the estate are both fall events from the same nonprofit.

A Former Rail Terminal Hosts Four Weekends

The longest event of the season takes place in the building with the most unusual history. Starting Small Business Saturday, November 28, the Montclair Flea's Holiday Market runs every Saturday and Sunday through December 20, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 1 Lackawanna Plaza. The organizers list festive décor, handmade gifts, vintage pieces and cozy accessories. They also point out that the market is indoors, so weather doesn't matter. Lackawanna Station's event page adds free Santa photos from noon to 4 p.m. at each market.

That indoor space was empty not long ago. In late 2024, Montclair Local described Lackawanna Plaza as the former train-station terminal, about 100,000 square feet that had sat mostly vacant for nine years. The first pop-up there paired with the Montclair Flea in the former Pathmark space. By May 2025, The Montclair Girl was reporting on the Flea's permanent residency at Lackawanna Station and noted that locals already knew it from the previous year's Holiday Market.

This is the market's third December in the terminal. It started as an experiment in an empty building and now has a regular place on the town calendar. Its four weekends also overlap every Saturday event the History Center holds in December, which matters when you plan the month.

The Lighting Happens at a Hotel

Montclair Center's events calendar lists one tree lighting so far this season, and a hotel is hosting it. The MC Hotel's Holiday Tree Lighting is Tuesday, December 1, at 6:30 p.m. at 690 Bloomfield Avenue, with festive music, treats and refreshments. It falls between the Flea's first two weekends. It's the only Monday-through-Thursday evening on this calendar after the boutique's members' night, so it fits around a workday.

Crane House Gets Four Events

The History Center's December is built around one property, decorated for the season and opened to visitors in four different ways.

The first opening is part of the Essex County Holiday House Tour on December 5 and 6, from noon to 3 p.m. Visitors walk through Crane House and the Historic YWCA Museum at their own pace, with period decorations by the Garden Club of Montclair. Admission is $5 per person, and children under 12 get in free. The History Center's event listing bills the weekend as a chance to be among the first to see the house ready for the holidays.

The second is a much smaller evening event. The Holiday Candlelight Tour on Friday, December 11, runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. It includes historic drinks, the decorated museum, and holiday traditions from the 1700s through the 20th century. Tickets are $25, or $20 for members, and the tour is capped at 15 people. At $25 it costs five times the open-house ticket, for a group of 15 at most.

The third and fourth are the Winter Wonderland Open Houses on Saturdays, December 12 and December 19, from noon to 3 p.m. at 108 Orange Road. Visitors can tour the decorated 230-year-old house at their own pace or sit by the hearth. Admission is $5, and children under 12 are free.

Four events across five December dates in one house give the month a steady pace. The two open-house Saturdays fall on Flea weekends. The house tour weekend does too. That puts Orange Road and Lackawanna Plaza on the same afternoons for three of the Flea's four weekends.

The Museum Opens a Show the Night of the Candlelight Tour

The Montclair Art Museum hosts the Foundation's November fundraiser and also opens its own winter exhibition in the middle of December. Samar Husseini: Identity in Paint and Thread opens December 11 and runs through February 21, 2027. That's the same Friday as the Candlelight Tour on Orange Road.

Two other exhibitions run through the whole season. Nadia Myre: Analog/ues is on view through January 17, 2027, and Kate Dodd: You're Invited! runs through August 6, 2027. On the museum's calendar, Myre's show closes after the holidays and Dodd's carries into next summer. Both are good options for a weekday between the dated events.

How the Weekends Line Up

With the dates side by side, the season breaks into a short run of weekends, each built around a different building:

  1. November 13 to 15. Van Vleck House hosts the Holiday Boutique, closing at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
  2. November 21. Deck the Halls takes over the Montclair Art Museum for the evening.
  3. November 28 and 29. The Flea's Holiday Market opens on Small Business Saturday at Lackawanna Plaza.
  4. December 5 and 6. Crane House is open for the Essex County Holiday House Tour from noon to 3 p.m., and the Flea runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  5. December 11 to 13. The Husseini exhibition and the Candlelight Tour share Friday. The first Winter Wonderland Open House and another Flea weekend follow on Saturday.
  6. December 19 and 20. The second Winter Wonderland Open House is Saturday, and the Flea's final weekend wraps up Sunday at 5 p.m.

On the busiest weekends, a family could do the noon-to-3 window at Crane House and still make it to Lackawanna Plaza before the Flea closes at 5 p.m., with Santa photos running until 4 p.m.
